About

Zheng Xia is an associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at UT Austin and an affiliated member of the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences. He earned his B.S. in Automation and Control Engineering and his Ph.D. in Pattern Recognition and Intelligent Systems from Zhejiang University and completed postdoctoral training in computational biology at Houston Methodist Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine. Before joining UT Austin, he was an associate professor of biomedical engineering and a faculty member of the Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).

Xia’s lab develops new computational biology tools based on machine learning and artificial intelligence to transform large-scale biomedical data into biological insights and clinically actionable predictions. A central goal of the lab is to link molecular measurements to clinical phenotypes, enabling new discoveries from multimodal datasets, including (epi)genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and imaging data at single-cell resolution. Through close collaborations with biologists and clinicians, the lab experimentally validates computational findings and translates them toward clinical applications. His group has developed a series of bioinformatics tools published in Nature Biotechnology, Nature Machine Intelligence and Cancer Discovery.

Xia joined UT Austin as a CPRIT Scholar in Cancer Research through a Rising Star Award from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). His research is also supported by NIH R01 awards and the DoD Prostate Cancer Research Program.
