Tyrone Porter Named BMES Fellow
Tyrone Porter, chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, has been elected to the newest class of Biomedical Engineering Society Fellows.
The Biomedical Engineering Society selected Porter as a fellow in recognition of his exceptional achievements and contributions to the field. Election as a BMES Fellow is a prestigious distinction that recognizes sustained leadership, innovation and impact in biomedical engineering.
Porter joined UT BME as a professor in 2020 and has served as chair of the department since 2022. His research focuses on biomedical acoustic technologies, such as photoacoustic imaging and high intensity focused ultrasound, paired with chemically and biomolecularly engineered vesicles for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. His work aims to expand the possibilities of biomedical acoustic technology, including its use in quantitative functional imaging of tissues and organs and the reversible opening of the blood-brain barrier for drug delivery to the brain. He has also promoted biomedical engineering and its role in advancing medicine to the general public, advocating to address disparities in medicine and broaden representation in the field.
“It’s a tremendous honor to be recognized by colleagues for my scholarly contributions to biomedical engineering and elected as a Fellow of BMES. My sincere gratitude to the review committee and to my group members and collaborators without whom the research would not be possible,” said Porter.
The 2026 class of BMES Fellows will be honored at the BMES Annual Meeting this October. Porter will be joined at the meeting by members of the UT BMES student chapter, which has also been selected as the Biomedical Engineering Society’s 2026 Outstanding Student Chapter.
