The award recognizes outstanding staff or faculty members viewed by the Women in Engineering Program as helping advance women in the field of engineering.
The Cockrell School of Engineering’s Women in Engineering Program (WEP) has honored Mia K. Markey, professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, with their 2016 Women in Engineering Advocate Award. With this award, the Women in Engineering Program recognizes outstanding staff or faculty members for helping advance women in the field of engineering.
Markey, who holds the Engineering Foundation Faculty Fellow in Engineering, has served as chair of the WEP Faculty Committee since 2010 where she has advanced equity and family-friendly policies for students. The committee she chairs has implemented an academic accommodations policy for graduate student parents and shares advocacy tips to promote equity in classes, labs, and workplaces.
Markey directs the Biomedical Informatics Lab, whose mission is to design decision support systems for clinical decision-making and scientific discovery. She was recently elected to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) College of Fellows.
