The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) recently named Professor John Zhang as one of 33 Young Faculty Award recipients.
Professor Zhang accepted the award at a ceremony held on September 21–22 in Arlington, Virgina. DARPA Director Dr. Regina Dugan and Deputy Director Dr. Ken Gabriel presented the award.
The Young Faculty Award Program combines funding and mentoring with industry and DoD networking early in an awardee’s career to aid in framing research within the context of DoD’s needs.
The $300,000 two-year award will fund Zhang’s research in developing patterned plasmonic surfaces on microelectromechanical systems—research that has the potential to be used in healthcare, environmental, and defense applications.
