ABSTRACT:

Recent advancements in electronics, optics, materials science, and biology have driven rapid progress in neuroengineering platforms for interacting with the brain and biological systems. Yet, challenges remain in achieving diverse sensing modalities and spatial coverage. In this talk, I will introduce both implantable and non-invasive neurotechnologies for multimodal and multidimensional neural interfaces. First, I will introduce a multifunctional fiber-based platform with hybrid sensing capabilities for neural activity detection, optical sensing, and electrochemical monitoring of tumor growth. Second, I will present a three-dimensional multifunctional neural interface that can access multiple brain regions across large volumes with only a single implantation. Third, I will discuss a non-invasive strategy leveraging a circulating light source activated by focused ultrasound for brain-wide dynamic neuromodulation with cell-type specificity and high spatiotemporal resolution. Together, these technologies offer scalable and versatile solutions for interfacing with complex biological systems, providing new opportunities for both fundamental research and applications in life sciences and medicine.
