ABSTRACT:
This seminar first reviews some exciting technology breakthroughs in image-guided surgery – including intraoperative 3D imaging, registration, and visualization – and new research underway via the “IG-RABIT” collaboration between UT Austin and MD Anderson Cancer Center for image-guided robot-assisted orthopaedic surgery. From this vantage of engineering research and innovation, future prospects are considered through the lens of “surgineering,” which aims to deepen engagement and impact from biomedical engineers, computer scientists, and medical physicists in clinical practice. Such prospects include new opportunities in surgical data science, digital twinning, optimization and predictive modeling of clinical outcomes, rigorous integration and implementation of emerging technologies, and operations research approaches to maximizing access to high-quality care.
