The University of Texas at Austin’s Office of Technology and Commercialization reports that researchers in the Department of Biomedical Engineering were issued seven patents during the 2011–2012 fiscal year. Patents filed by professors Mia Markey, Thomas Milner, Nicholas Peppas, John X.J. Zhang, and postdoctoral researcher Carolyn Bayer may advance health care.

These patented technologies and methodologies may improve on mammographic breast cancer detection; disease and cancer diagnostics through ultrasound, optical coherence tomography, and other imaging techniques; targeted drug delivery; and smaller, portable, point-of-care medical devices.
