The University of Texas at Austin Student Volunteer Board recently recognized The Biomedical Outreach and Leadership Team (BOLT) with the Premier Student Organization in Service Award for the month of September 2010.

BOLT, a university-wide organization open to both undergraduate and graduate students, affects change in the K–12 community by promoting higher education and stimulating young students’ interests in science, technology, engineering, and math.

This September, the group’s 25 members took part in three activities. These included an event called Engineering Saturday at the Austin’s Children Museum, where BOLT members taught kids about the workings of muscles and joints by building a robotic hand with the capability of making the university’s popular “Hook ‘Em” sign. A second event involved members volunteering at the Girl Scout STEM Festival where BOLT members taught kids about densities, immiscible liquids, and solubility by teaching them to make their own lava lamps.

The group’s last major September event challenged 50 students from the First Lego League (FLL) teams to build robots capable of navigating an obstacle course and to come up with a solution to a real-world problem. BOLT members mentored the FLL participants and informed them about biomedical engineering at The University of Texas at Austin through tours of the Biomedical Engineering Building.

BOLT was recognized for their outstanding service on October 7.
