The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) have recognized Professor Kenneth Diller with the prestigious Max Jacob Memorial Award. The award recognizes eminent scholarly achievement and distinguished leadership in the field of heat transfer. It is the highest honor in the field of heat transfer bestowed by ASME and AIChE.
Kenneth Diller
Diller is an internationally recognized authority in heat- and temperature-related processes in living tissues and how they may be applied in the design of therapeutic devices. His first studies in the 1960s were related to the frozen banking of cells and tissues for transplantation. He has also pursued advanced analysis of burn injury occurrence and treatment and the application of thermal therapy for cancer.
His current research focuses on the use of temperature manipulation to enhance the healing of injured soft tissues, the development of a new generation of safer and more effective devices for lowering body core temperature in patients with major organ ischemia as caused by cardiac arrest, stroke, or traumatic brain injury, and the creation of a thermal microenvironment to improve the ability to sleep well.
Diller, who holds the Robert M. and Prudie Leibrock Endowed Professorship in Engineering, has published more than 275 refereed papers and book chapters and written or edited seventeen books. His research has led to ten patents and the formation of two medical device companies.
Diller is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineers, and the Biomedical Engineering Society. He is a recent recipient of the American So¬ciety of Mechanical Engineer's 75th Anniversary Medal of the Heat Transfer Division, and was named a Society of Cryobiology Fellow earlier this year. He has received the H.R. Lissner Medal in Bioengineering and has been named by Science Digest as a Top 100 Scientific Innovator in the U.S.
Diller will receive the Max Jacob Memorial Award during the 2014 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, which will take place November 14–20, 2014 in Montreal, Canada.
