Dr. Nicholas A. Peppas, the Fletcher Stuckey Pratt Chair in Engineering, has been appointed as Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering of the University of Texas at Austin, effective September 1, 2009.

Dr. Nicholas A. Peppas, the Fletcher Stuckey Pratt Chair in Engineering, has been appointed as Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering of the University of Texas at Austin, effective September 1, 2009. In his announcement to the faculty, Dr. Gregory Fenves, Dean of the Cockrell School of Engineering, noted: "Dr. Peppas brings an exciting vision for the field, backed by a truly outstanding record of research accomplishments, strong teaching, and dedicated service to the Department and the University. Nicholas’ national and international recognition will be an asset as BME moves into its next phase."

Dr. Peppas joined the University of Texas at Austin in January 2003. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of France (Pharmacy section), and the Texas Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Sciences. He is the author of 34 books, 1,050 publications and 50 international patents. He received his doctor of science (Sc. D.) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and three additional honorary doctorates from the University of Ghent, Belgium, the University of Parma, Italy, and the University of Athens, Greece. He is the President of the International Union of Societies of Biomaterials Science and Engineering and serves on the Board of the (US) Biomedical Engineering Society. He is Associate Editor of the Biomedical Engineering Series of Books of Cambridge University Press, and the journals Biomedical Nanodevices, Pharmaceutical Research, and AIChE Journal.
