His is recognized for his leading and seminal contributions to chemical engineering and bioengineering and for his profound impact upon engineering in the post-World War II era. AIChE is the professional and technical association of more than 55,000 chemical engineers in the USA and around the world. It was founded in Philadelphia, PA on June 22, 1908. Recipients of this recognition were nominate by the Centennial Committee and voted “by more than a thousand members”.

He was elected a Director of AIChE (1999-2002), a member of the Chemical Technology Council, Chair of the Materials Engineering and Sciences Division (1988-90), and Director of the Food, Pharmaceutical and Bioengineering Division (1994-97). Peppas was the founder of the Biomaterials Section of AIChE in 1979, and of the Bionanotechnology Section in 2002, and served as their first Chair. In the 1980s, he was also the Chair of the Fundamentals in Engineering and Life Sciences Section.
He has received numerous other awards and recognitions from AIChE including the William H. Walker Award (highest ChE recognition, 2006) and the Jay Bailey Award, (highest bioengineering recognition, 2006). In 2007 he was the 59th Institute Lecturer. He has also received the Food, Pharmaceutical and Bioengineering Award (1994), the Materials Engineering and Sciences Award (1984) and the National Best Counselor Award (1982).
