Biomedical engineering students took part in National Engineers Week (E-Week) activities, February 22 through March 1, winning first place in the school-wide competition and raising over $1,100 to be donated to Helping Hand, an Austin charity that helps abused and neglected children.
E-Week, started by the National Society of Professional Engineers in 1951, calls attention to societal contributions made by engineers.
At The University of Texas at Austin, participants take part in a week-long competition hosted by the Student Engineering Council where students raise money and promote engineering through outreach events.
The biomedical engineering team, named BME Strike Force, participated in physical activities such as Human Foosball and So You Think You Can Dance competitions as well as intellectual events such as Puzzleception and Trivia Relay Challenge. Outreach events included engaging children with engineering experiments through Introduce a Girl to Engineering and Engineering Day at The Thinkery museum. The week culminated with a co-ed pageant called R. Ramshorn where participants compete in talent and question-related segments.
Ongoing activities included a week-long scavenger hunt and Penny War, where students, professors, and staff helped raise a total donation of $5,500 for Helping Hand.
