Biomedical engineering professor Mia K. Markey and electrical engineering Al Bovik have been awarded $50,000 from the UT System to develop a computer program to improve evaluation of x-ray images, specifically mammograms.

The computer-aided detection system was one of eight projects to receive grant money from the UT System's Texas Ignition Fund. The UT System Board of Regents allocated $2 million in 2007 to the fund to get university research out of the laboratory and into the market as soon as possible. Dr. Markey and the other UT researchers are working on an algorithm to assist in identifying speculated masses that often go undetected. Their computer system will aid radiologists to accurately identify these masses that can be missed in 10 to 30 percent of cancers.
