In a recently completed analysis of impactful publications, the Times Higher Education published the rankings for the “Top Scientists in Pharmacology and Toxicology” worldwide, a field that includes drug delivery and controlled release. Professor Nicholas Peppas, Chair of the Biomedical Engineering Department, and his group were ranked second in the world in the number of citations of work relevant to pharmacology and toxicology between January 2000 and August 2010 with 3,372 citations for their work in these specific subfields. In addition, Peppas and his group were ranked fourth in number of citations per paper with 51.4 citations. The average impact for papers published in pharmacology and toxicology journals over the period is 12.
The data on high-impact researchers in pharmacology and toxicology were extracted from the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database of Thomson Reuters. Approximately 294,900 author records were surveyed to obtain the results. Top papers are defined as highly cited papers rank in the top 1 per cent by total citations in their field when compared with papers published the same papers.
