ABSTRACT: Breast reconstruction is a necessary component of comprehensive breast cancer care. While we have made great strides to offer patients aesthetic and natural results, the reconstructive options are limited in terms of what may ultimately be offered to achieve a reasonable result. Those limitations are not only based upon the type of oncologic surgery offered, but also the health of the patient, the need for chemotherapy or radiation, the willingness to have additional scars, individual patient characteristics, timing, and reconstructive goals. We’ll be talking about two general oncologic approaches, and the most commonly employed reconstructive options based upon those approaches. We’ll address the reconstructive shortcomings and pitfalls inherent to each case and discuss opportunities to shift he paradigm for improved patient care.
