The National Institutes of Health has awarded Wilton Snead, a graduate student working with Professor Jeanne Stachowiak, with a Kirschstein-NRSA predoctoral (F31) fellowship.
Snead's research studies the physical mechanisms of membrane shaping in the cell and elucidates a general way that cells do this. His research provides a simple, thermodynamic explanation for the complex process of membrane shaping by proteins.
Snead’s NIH application was noted for several strengths, including academic performance, strong research environment, and a highly original scientific idea that combines multi-scale approaches from single molecules to whole cells in order to answer a fundamental question in cell biology. Better understanding of cellular biology will lead to improved treatment of disease.
